Theme Of Madness In Hamlet And Ophelia - 996 Words

Throughout the centuries, the medicines used to treat madness have varied; however, the ultimate treatment has remained the same: negligence or ignorance. During the 14th and 15th centuries, mental illness was viewed as an inhabitation of an individual by demons or evil spirits; the method utilized to cure this ailment was a combination of exorcism and rituals. The patients were usually placed in hospices then asylums. During the 16th through 20th centuries, mentally ill patients were not often treated; most were cared for by their respective communities. Towards the 19th and 20ths centuries, many patients were placed in asylums that did not focus on patients’ treatment. Unlike the society of his time, Shakespeare illuminates the realities†¦show more content†¦While Hamlet avoids thinking about his actions, Ophelia constantly dwells on her actions. After Ophelia learns of her father’s death, she immediately begins to reference the death of her father juxtaposed by her love of Hamlet: â€Å"He is dead and gone; at his heels a grass-green turf...And I a maid at your window, to be your Valentine...Let in the maid that out a maid never departed more.† (173). Both Ophelia and Hamlet refuse to dwell in melancholia; instead, they turn to a sort of madness in order to be released from their guilt and to have control over their bodies. By distancing themselves from their sources of guilt, Hamlet and Ophelia gain the ability to fulfill actions that they would not normally consider. Hamlet gains the ability to kill Claudius while Ophelia gains the ability to kill herself. In the first six soliloquies, Hamlet contemplates killing himself and killing Claudius, yet he is never able to accomplish either. Hamlet contemplates succumbing to madness in his fourth soliloquy: â€Å"To be, or not to be, that is the question-whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of trou bles† (105). Hamlet firmly decides to kill Claudius after Hamlet killed Polonius because Hamlet believes he has nothing to lose; therefore, it will be nobler to kill the supposed cause of his griefShow MoreRelatedTheme of Madness and Causes: Hamlet and Ophelia Essay1788 Words   |  8 PagesIn Shakespeares Hamlet, there are two characters that display qualities of insanity. More on the priest issue I posted about earlier. Marriage of Faith is an article about priests who have left their priesthood to become married. I came across it as I was looking for information to back up what I learned a few years ago priests dont get married because the Church, which owned so much of the world in the middle ages, didnt want the property left in a will to someones family. From the article:39 Popes Were Married and St. Peter Was a Married Priest. Heres what the organization wants people to know: that prior to the year 1139, popes, bishops, and priests were married. That Catholic priests in the Eastern rites, such as Ukrainians, Romanians, and Armenians, are allowed to marry. That many priests who have served for decades are cut off with no pension after they marry. That the Catholic Church changed the celibacy law in the 12th century to prevent priests, upon their death, from leavi ng their homes and land to their families. Celibacy, declares Haggett, is all about real estate.I learned about this when I was in Germany, visiting places like the Prince Bishops Palace in Wurzberg. Note the name Prince Bishop. The Bishop of the region was also the Prince of the region. If you follow the link and look at the frescos painted on the ceiling, they are paintings of the Bishop with his mistress. The one that bore him something like 12 children. But they were never married so when he died, the Church kept the property. Yes, I am glad to be Catholic these days, after Vatican II, but back then I would have been handing Martin Luther the nails to use to hang his thesis on the cathedral door. .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .postImageUrl , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:hover , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:visited , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:active { border:0!important; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:active , .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7 .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u63865a9f62a88c26ad19652b840ba1e7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Paper On The Book, Fences Essay:: Christine wrote at 04:48 PM in BlahBlahBabble :: Return For More :: Talk Back (2) :: New Photos New photographs added to the Pixelog. The quote that sums it up best for me is, We are angry that these spiritual arbiters are unyielding when the sins belong to us, not to them. The are actually debating over who should be removed from the priesthood based on the number of times that they abused children, depending on the age of the victims and the frequency. WHY would these things matter? NO. They dont. They did finally agree on a one-grope-and-youre-out policy, but that could be watered down at the Bishops conference this summer. Lets get this straight. Until I get an annulment, the Church wont allow me to remarry. I also dont follow the Vaticans terms about birth control. So my sins here are to have married divorced and to take pills so I dont get pregnant (or just to keep my hormones at an even level.) If I remarry without an annulment, the Church will consider that wrong, they wont recognize it, and I wont be allowed to participate in the sacraments such as Communion. But were not tossing the known child-abusing priests out? We will allow them to stay in their positions, performing the sacraments? Isnt that a thousand times worse them me participating in them? What is wrong with this picture? Its time to allow priests to be married. I strongly believe that if there wasnt such a shortage of priests they would be responding to this in the way that they should be. Regardless, its time to purge the corruption from the alter and excommunicate the priests involved in this horrendous crime. The original mission is that â€Å"Trader Joe’s is for overeducated and underpaid people, for all the classical musicians, museum curators, journalists†. Trader Joe’s offered natural and organic goods, and private label items. Trader Joe’s mission is to focus on providing great value to customers by having competitive prices on all their products. They try to bring a good shopping experience to the customer. The selection of privately labeled products is large. Its weaknesses are that its store locating is not in local urban areas, and it also lacks presence on social media platforms. After conducting a thorough analysis of the industry, competitors, and the company itself, I have developed two recommendations that will enable Trader Joe’s to gain profitability and increase their market position. My recommendations for Trader Joe’s following course of action are: Recommendation 1: Online Market Recommendation 2: Changing marketing strategy Recommendation 3: Improve technology in stores With the analysis I come up with three recommendations. We will write a custom essay sample on Trader Joes or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page These recommendations are detailed in the following section. The supermarket industry is a highly competitive industry. Many companies with viable resources and capabilities are fighting for market share. Recommendation 1: online market Internet plays an important role in modern lives. More and more people like shopping online. The cost of online operation is low. Because of the store location, a lot of people do not have the access to the Trader Joe’s product. â€Å"Many customers launched online efforts to persuade Trader Joe’s to open a store in their region. Customers created fan pages, wrote cook featuring meals prepared with the firm’s products, and waited in line for hours before a new store grand opening†. These facts indicate that consumers enjoy shopping at Trader Joe’s. To open a new store need prepare a lot. It also needs a lot of funds. Trader Joe’s has more than 400 locations across 37 states. Many places still do not have even one Trader Joe’s store. Online store will let more people who like Trader Joe’s shop here. It also requires fewer funds than local stores. According to Competitors overview (Appendix D), Whole Food does not offer online shopping either. This is a good chance for Trader Joe’s to develop more customers. The Five Forces (Appendix B) indicates that the bargaining power of buyers is moderate to high. Customers have a lot of choice of organic food. To operate online makes Trader Joe’s more reachable to consumers. By investing in online market, Trader Joe’s will be able to take full advantages of its operation strategy and brand image already establish. Recommendation 2: Changing marketing strategy When Trader Joe’s was founded in 1954, the company avoided the traditional supermarket advertising method, such as coupon-filled circulars in the newspapers or television commercials. It used a customer newsletter, which provide information on certain products and introduced new products. It also used short radio ads. The company did not change its advertising method. Trader Joe’s never ran television ads. Customers typically learned about Trader Joe’s though word of mouth. The SWOT analysis (Appendix C) indicates that Trader Joe’s need to increase its media exposure. Television ads are more attractive to consumers than newsletter or radio ads. Consumers can see and hear the information of products. It just makes people feel like in the store. It is more reliable to customers. People will pay more attention to the television ads. Television ads usually play over and over again. Television ads will deepen consumers’ impression about Trader Joe’s product and service. Trader Joe’s does not have official social media pages either. The Trader Joe’s only have Facebook fan pages. The potential customers do not have the information access to Trader Joe’s. The company can create the official Facebook pages or Twitter account. It will provide more information about Trader Joe’s. It also can use these social media accounts to advertise. People pay more attention to television and social media. To step into television ads and social media field, Trader Joe’s will be able gain more customers. Recommendation 3: Improve technology in stores Because of the inefficient checkout process, checkout lines are quite long at Trader Joe’s during busy Saturday mornings and parking lots are crowed. A lot of customers of Trader Joe’s complain about this situation. Trader Joe’s did not invest much in technology in the stores. The company does not offer self-checkout lanes. It also does not have flat-screen television at the checkout counter. Because of its inefficient checkout system, customer will spend a lot of time in waiting in the checkout lines. It also makes the parking lot do not have enough space for the coming customers. Now time is more valuable for modern people. The inefficient checkout will lose customers. People will balance the price of products with the time they spent in the checkout lines. When they spend more time in waiting to checkout, they will probably go to the place with higher price of product but less time to wait. In that case, Trader Joe’s will lose its customers. By investing more in technology in stores, Trader Joe’s will be able to make the store operation more efficient and have more customers without complaining about the checkout time or crowed parking lot. Appendix A PESTEL Analysis Political factors: The health issue always plays an important role in politics. People consider food safety more seriously. Economic conditions: Trader Joe’s target group is overeducated and underpaid people. The price of organic food is usually high than non-organic food, so consumers must balance their income with desired health benefits. Sociocultural factors: The organic food market are benefited from an increasingly health conscious consumer. Technology factors: Technology improvement will make product process more efficient. Appendix BFive Forces Analysis Threats of Rivalry Rivalry within the organic food retail industry is strong for Trader Joe’s as grocers want to gain more market share of the organic market. The main organic grocer competitor is Whole Food. Whole Food is good at communicating effectively with the market. Its stores are located in target market areas and have a larger space than Trader Joe’s. Threat of Entry The threat of entry by new entrants is low and the exit barriers are strong. It is easier for major corporations to enter the market since they can finance the type of goods the customers are looking for. Threat of substitute products or service Trader Joe’s did not limit their products to only being organic foods. Both Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s attracted health nuts, intellectuals, and foodies. Trader Joe’s primary focus is low price. However conventional store like Wal-Mart, who is known for its low prices, begins offering natural foods as well. Bargaining power of buyers The demand of organic food is growing. Factors will influence a buyer including costs, customer service, and the store environment. Trader Joe’s wants their customers delighted and satisfied. The demand for food will not decrease and consumers will have a demand for good value products, which have good quality with reasonable price. Bargaining Power of Suppliers The supplier industry is more concentrated. Trader Joe’s has a strong network of suppliers. Stores are expanding the varieties of products they provide like organic product lines and private label store brands. The supply chain is more integrated than it was in the past. Companies have their own distribution centers, so it is more convenient. Changing suppliers would be difficult for Trader Joe’s. Overall Analysis Based on Porter’s Five Forces, rivalry amongst competitors is high, threat to entry is medium/low, threat of substitute product is medium, bargaining power of suppliers is high, and bargaining power of buyers is moderate to high. Trader Joe’s is differentiated with their innovative, one-of-a-kind foods priced well below their competitors. Trader Joe’s has an obligation to their employees, customers, and the community. To start off, Trader Joe’s has an obligation to their employees, and employees have certain expectations about their job concerning the job itself, pay, benefits, promotion, co-workers, and supervision. Employees expect, or at least hope for, a pleasant work environment, reasonable compensation, benefits such as insurance, opportunities for advancement, friendly co-workers, and guidance when they need it and respect from their supervisors. Trader Joe’s seems to meet their employee expectations. They are surrounded by an exciting, friendly, fun, and happy environment every day. They earn significantly more than employees at other grocery chains with managers making at least around 0,000 per year. There are opportunities for advancement as they hire managers only from within the company. They even have their own university, Trader Joe’s University, where their future leaders enroll in training programs to ensure they will be able to meet company and customer expectations. The university also teaches them to instill the Trader Joe’s attitude. Management spends their days on the floor with their crew and customers instead of in an office with the door closed. Trader Joe’s fulfills their obligations to their employees. Trader Jos’s also has an obligation to their customers, and customers also have certain expectations, such as, reasonable prices, availability of stock, correct information about products, a pleasant shopping environment and experience, and friendly and helpful employees. Customers definitely receive an enjoyable shopping experience from the theme to the employees. They have even come to expect a customer-focused attitude specifically from Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s highlights â€Å"soft skills† as much as the actual retail experience. The employees are friendly, are customer involved, and have high product knowledge. The employees taste and learn about the products, share their experiences, and take the time to locate and recommend products. Trader Joe’s also has a philosophy of â€Å"every penny we save is a penny you save. † They focus on natural ingredient, buy directly from suppliers whenever possible, buy in volume, contract early, do not give their suppliers a fee for putting items on the shelf, and drop items that don’t pull weight to keep costs down. Their CEO does not even have a secretary to cut every possible cost so they can offer lower prices. They limit their stock while selling twice as much as other supermarkets by selling high quality products at lower prices. Trader Joe’s says, â€Å"Giving people too much choice can result in paralysis†¦the more options you offer, the less likely people are to choose any. † Trader Joe’s then has an obligation to the community, and the community has certain expectations of Trader Joe’s. They have an obligation to the community to be responsible, abide by rules and regulations, proved accurate information, provide safe products, and respect environmental concerns. They seem to be fulfilling their obligations to the community, but in 2010, Trader Joe’s was found selling 15 out of 22 red-list seafoods, those that are overfished and need to be conserved for their survival. This raised high concerns. They were quick to respond with a promise to remove the red-listed seafood, to improve product labeling with more accurate information about seafood products, and to only offer sustainable seafood in all formats by the end of 2012. They started using the Seafood Watch list to focus their product development and other third-party, science-based information to help with their goals. They are responding to customer concerns and feedback to fit customer needs of food safety and taste and environmental concerns. Trader Joe’s did break obligations to the community, but they are confronting the situation and responding to concerns to fix the problem. If they keep their promise they can return to fulfilling all their obligations. Any obligation to the community is also an obligation to their customers. Aside from the seafood situation, Trader Joe’s fulfills their obligations to their customers. If they fix the seafood situation and keep their end of 2012 promise, their customers will probably forgive and trust them. However, they need to make sure they do not pass any of the cost of their obligation to see through on their promise because this could then damage their reputation.
